How to Expand Windows Server Disk? (Extend Volume Passive Problem Solution)
After increasing the disk size of your virtual server (VDS) from our customer panel, the C: drive in Windows will not automatically cover this space. In order for Windows to see the disk, expansion must be made from the Disk Management panel. However, sometimes the Extend option may not be active (grey) because there is a "Recovery Partition" on the right side of the C disk. Here is the definitive solution to this problem.
Step 1: Standard Disk Expansion (If Space is Free)
- Right click on the start menu Disk Management Open the (Disk Management) panel.
- Black color at the bottom of the panel "unreserved" You will see an (unallocated) field.
- If this black area is directly to the right of the C: drive, right-click on the C: drive and click "Expand Volume" You can confirm the wizard and enlarge the disk by clicking (Extend Volume).
Step 2: Solution if "Extend Volume" Option is Grey/Inactive
If there is a blue recovery or system partition between the C disk and the Unallocated (Black) space, Windows will not allow expansion. To remove the obstacle with CMD without losing data:
- Type CMD in the start menu, right click and Run as Administrator say.
- Type the following commands and press Enter:
diskpart(Opens the disk management module)list disk(Lists disks, usually Disk 0)select disk 0(Selects main disk)list partition(Lists the partitions on the disk) - In the partition list, find "Recovery", which is usually around 500 MB, or the number of the partition causing the blockage (Ex: Partition 3).
- In order:
select partition 3then type to delete the protected partition.delete partition overriderun the command. - The barrier has been removed! Now when you go back to the Disk Management screen and refresh the page, right click on the C: drive Expand Volume You will see that the option is active.
